Vavuniya Archaeological Museum

This is a regional museum showcasing archaeological artifacts from Vavuniya and its surroundings.

It is located in the Vavuniya district and approximately 250 km from Colombo.

It can be visited all year long, but weekdays are best for a quieter experience.

The Vavuniya Archaeological Museum has a rich collection of antiques. The most important are the Buddha statues from the period between the 5th and the 8th century, found in the Madukanda Temple and in Mannar limestone. There are also pinched-faced terracotta figures, which belong to the 4th and the 5th century and were found in Kilinochchi. Here, history enthusiasts will learn a lot about Sri Lanka’s past and the progress of its culture.
