This is a historic village, famous as the hideout of Saradiel, Sri Lanka’s Robin Hood.

It is located in Kegalle District and approximately 100 km from Colombo.

The best time to visit is from December to April for clear weather and hiking conditions.

Uthuwankanda is a solitary hill in Mawanella. Uthuwankanda village is rich in biodiversity including streams, waterfalls, fauna, and flora. It is the place where Saradiel, the figure known as Sri Lanka’s Robin Hood, was hiding. He exploited British administrators and rich people and gave the booty to the poor. Eventually, he was captured and sentenced to death by the British rulers. Travelers can go on a hike and discover a cave, hidden in a large rounded rock, which is actually a tunnel dug by Saradiel, and it is connected to three other tunnels.
