It’s believed this beautiful tank in Tissa was built in the 3rd century BC and is one of the four large ancient irrigation tanks in the area. This artificial lake works as a rainwater reservoir. This Tissa Wewa dam was built across Kirindi Oya to divert water to it. It is recognized as the first known oblique dam in the world, showing the knowledge the Sri Lankan engineers had of handling large amounts and areas of water. Therefore, this Tissa Wewa is an engineering masterpiece of Sri Lanka’s ancient tank- building technology.
