It was brought to Sri Lanka from India by the Emperor Asoka’s daughter Sanghamitta Thera. It is believed that this Bo sapling was a branch of the Bo Tree, where Buddha attained enlightenment. It is one of the oldest historically authenticated trees in the world. Many pilgrims come here on weekends and on poya days, and especially in April, many devotees come for the snana pooja or the prayers. There are many historical monuments around the Sri Maha Bodhi.
