Rathnapura is the capital of Sabaragamuwa Province. The word Ratnapura means city of gems. It is the centre of long-established industry of valuable stone mining. The city is the starting point of the hilly region. There are many worship places and temples and also many waterfalls, wildlife, reservoirs and rainforests. Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada), Uda Walawe National Park and Sinharaja Rainforest are the most popular travelling places around here. Ratnapura’s history goes back to the 1st century AD. It was influenced by the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British invasions, which can be seen by the ruins. When Sinhala kings regained control over the city, they built their own monuments, where the influence of the Kandyan Kingdom is seen.
The city is located about 94km from Colombo.
