Pigeon Island National Park is located next to the coast of Nilaveli in Trincomalee. This Island was titled as a sanctuary in 1963 and upgraded to the national park in 2003. It contains two islands, the large and the small pigeon island. The large pigeon island is covered by coral reefs, and the small pigeon island is surrounded by small rocky islands. There are around 100 species of corals and 300 coral reef fish. Juvenile and adult Blacktip reef shark, Hawksbill turtle, Green turtle, Olive Ridley and sea turtles can be seen around these islands. It is possible to go on a boat trip, diving and snorkelling excursions around Trincomalee and Nilaveli coast.
