What? This is a museum that highlights Sri Lanka’s maritime history, including shipwreck artifacts, traditional fishing techniques, and marine ecosystems.
Where? It is situated in a restored Dutch warehouse within Galle Fort and approximately 120 km from Colombo.
When? It can be visited all year long, with mornings being less crowded.
The National Maritime Museum, which is located within the Fort of Galle in a former Dutch storehouse, displays the fauna and flora of the sea. Artifacts consist of preserved models of whales and fishes and underwater archaeology. The National Cultural Museum at Church Street is another small museum that has a poor collection of the city’s colonial heritage. The Galle Fort itself is a much more interesting life museum as compared to the museums it houses.
