Nallur Kandasamy Kovil is one of the most beautiful Hindu temples in Sri Lanka, located 2 km north of the town center. The sacred deity of the temple is Murugan the protector (or Skanda). The original Murugan temple was built in the 15th century and destroyed by the Portuguese in the 17th century. The current building was constructed in 1734. It has beautiful carvings, paintings, shrines to Hindu deities, decorative brass work, pillared halls, and colorful gateways (gopurams). Besides, the temple is popular for its punctual offerings (pujas) and festival known as the Nallur Annual Festival, which is held in July/August every year and lasts for 25 days, each day having its own significance. It attracts Tamil pilgrims from all over the world.
