This Mulkirigala rock temple is situated 16 km northwest of Tangalla. The temple has had many names, such as Samudda Pabbatha, Muhunadra Giri, Muhudu Giri, Giriba Vehera, Giriba Lena, Dhakkina Giri, Dakkina Pabbatha, Muwatirigala, Mukirigalla, and Mulangiriya. This rock rises about 205m from the surrounding landmass and therefore resembles Dambulla and Sigiriya. Visitors have to climb the rock barefoot and bareheaded to see large reclining Buddhas and wall paintings. There is a unique Victorian monks’ graveyard beside the entrance to a Buddhist school for young monks (bhikkus). There are seven cave temples situated in five terraced areas of different altitudes. These are the Lower Terrace (or Patha Maluwa), Bo Tree Terrace (or Bodhi Maluwa), Great King’s Temple Terrace (or Raja Maha Vihara Maluwa), Upper Bo Tree Terrace (or Uda Bodhi Maluwa), and Chetiya Terrace (or Chaitya Maluwa). There are paths leading to a dagoba on the top of the rock, offering a nice view.
