Mellagala Hermitage

It can be visited all year long, though early mornings or late evenings are best for a peaceful atmosphere.

Mellagala Hermitage is an ancient, naturally caved complex about 10 km along the Kegalle-Dewala road. Various pre-Christian inscriptions have been discovered that had been used for monks’ meditation. The caves are surrounded by nature. There are several ancient shrines, but the highlight of the area is its tranquility.
