Commonly referred to as the Dumbara mountain range, the Knuckles mountain range is one of the most beautiful and gratifying natural sights to behold in the central part of Sri Lanka. With a total of 155 square kilometers, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is characterized by its rugged peaks, misty wilderness, waterfall, and species richness. Its name is taken from its resemblance to a closed fist; the range includes five high peaks that compose its iconic “knuckles”. This region is especially unique because of its diversity of endemic wildlife, such as rare orchids and leopards, as well as more than 200 bird species, attracting hikers and nature lovers in huge numbers.
