Kalutara Bodhiya

What?
This is one of Sri Lanka’s most sacred Buddhist sites, believed to be a sapling from the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura.

Where?
It is located in the Kalutara district and approximately 40 km from Colombo.

When?
It can be visited all year long, though evenings offer a serene atmosphere.

Beside the Kalu Ganga, Kalutara Bodhiya is the most famous and sacred Buddhist place in Kalutara and in Sri Lanka. This is one of the 32 places indicated in the 2nd century BC where seedlings from the original Bo Tree (Sri Maha Bodhi) were planted.

There is an unusual dagoba, which is hollow and doesn’t contain any relics of the Buddha. However, the walls are covered with interesting paintings telling the story of the Buddha.
