This is a coastal wetland rich in biodiversity, home to over 150 bird species, including migratory birds. Ideal for birdwatching and ecotourism.

It is located in the Hambantota district and approximately 215 km from Colombo.

When?
The best time to visit is from December to March for peak bird activity.

Kalmateiya wetland is located about 32 km east of Tangalla. It prides itself on a mature mangrove swamp with an extraordinary collection of waterbirds. Many migrant birds (including four species of plover, curlew, marsh sandpiper, curlew sandpiper, greenshank, and yellow wagtail) and resident birds (three kinds of egret, spoonbill, glossy ibis, and purple swamphen) can be seen here. The best time to see them is from November to March.
