About Jaffna

WHAT

Jaffna, once the industrious capital of the North and a major city, has faced the scars of a 27-year civil war but is now regaining vibrancy. Rich in history, with ancient roots dating back to King Devanampiya Tissa, it features significant Hindu, Christian, and Buddhist sites, including beautiful temples and inscriptions from various Sinhala kings. Historically influenced by Portuguese, Dutch, and British rule, Jaffna has experienced both cultural richness and conflict. Today, the community is rebuilding, with the economy opening up and a resurgence of local activities, making it an attractive destination for visitors interested in its unique heritage and landscapes.

WHERE

It is located about 390km north of Colombo. It is the centre of the Jaffna peninsula, which is separated from the Vanni region by the so called Elephant Pass. The Jaffna peninsula is famous for its rich agriculture – potatoes, chillies, onions, mangoes. The shallow lagoons around the peninsula are home to many different species of birds.

WHEN

Most of the year the region is dry, but after the north-eastern monsoon, from October to January, the greenery flourishes. It can be visited all year long.
