Bellanwila Temple (Bellanwila Raja Maha Viharaya) is situated close to Mount Lavinia and has a long and sacred history. It keeps statues of the Buddha and frescoes depicting his life. According to the historical data, it is one of the trees that grew out of thirty-two saplings of the sacred Bo Tree at Anuradhapura, which was planted in the 3rd century BC.
