Batticaloa Lighthouse is located near the estuary in Palameenmadu, around 5 km from Batticaloa town. It was built by the British in 1913. The oval masonry tower has five windows and an observatory deck and is 28m high. It used to be a symbol of light, relief, and hope for the sailors in the rough seas of the Indian Ocean. Today it is a historical landmark of Batticaloa. It is surrounded by palmyra and coconut trees, calm waters of the lagoon on one side, and the waves of the ocean on the other side.
