Batticaloa Fort is located in Batticaloa town. It was built by the Portuguese in 1628, and it was a trading and administrative center. The Dutch besieged the fort in 1638, established sovereignty, and were able to keep it for nearly two centuries. It was the first Sri Lanka’s Portuguese fort that was taken by the Dutch. The moat and the lagoon are the borders of the fort. Evidence of a Buddhist stupa and shatra from the Ruhuna Kingdom was found in the fort area, which implies that it had been a significant religious place. Local governmental administrative offices and the monument stone for the original Dutch church, which was built in the 18th century, can be seen inside the fort.
