Batticaloa is suitable for diving and the best season is from May to September. Besides, the highlights of the city are Batticaloa Fort, Lighthouse, Mamangam Hindu Temple and Unnichchai Tank. Because the majority of Batticaloa residents are Hindu many Hindu Temples can be seen. History of Batticaloa goes back to the 1st century AD. The name of Batticaloa is a Portuguese derivation. Its original name vas Matakkalappu (muddy swamp). The Mukkuwa named the place KaLappu-Mattam or boundary of lagoon and later it became Matta-Kallappu or flat lagoon. Batticaloa was threatened by the Europeans and Sri Lankan kings, and was impacted in World War II in 1942. There are several landmarks that remind us of the history of Batticaloa.
Batticaloa is located in the Eastern Province, about 300km from Colombo and about 111km south-east of Trincomalee.
