The Baobab Tree (also called the bottle tree, upside-down tree, and monkey bread tree) is a native tree of Africa, Madagascar and Australia and can be seen in Mannar. There are around 40 baobab trees in Sri Lanka, 34 of which can be seen in the Mannar district. It is believed that Arab traders brought and planted it here in 1477. In Sri Lanka the tree is named the Ali-Gaha because the bark of the tree resembles the elephant’s skin. The Tamils refer to it as Perukka.

The oldest, largest and most popular baobab tree is placed at Pallimunei, Mannar. It is about 800 years old and is 7.5 meters high.
