Where?
The Awkana Buddha is located in the village of Awkana, near Kekirawa, in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka.

When?
It can be visited all year long; for an even more enchanting experience, visit early in the morning when the first rays of sunlight illuminate the statue, highlighting its intricate carvings.

Aukana Buddha is the tallest Buddha statue in Sri Lanka, located in Kekirawa, 50km from Mihintale, Anuradhapura. It was built by King Dhatusena during the period between 455 and 473 AD, and it lies near the Kala Wewa reservoir. Aukana Buddha is Sri Lanka’s ancient architectural marvel and is 12m tall with 3m across the shoulders. It is made of granite and stands on a decorated lotus stone pedestal. It depicts a variation of the Abhaya mudra, a symbolic gesture carved on the statue, which signifies blessing.
