Star-Fort

What?
This is a Dutch-built fort from 1765, designed in a unique six-pointed star shape. It was constructed to protect Matara Fort from inland attacks and features a moat, prison cells, and a deep well.

Where?
It is located on the eastern bank of the Nilwala River in Matara, Southern Province, Sri Lanka and approximately 160 km from Colombo.

When?
It can be visited all year long.

Star Fort originates from the Dutch nation ruling period. It was constructed in 1763 in the time of the governance of Baron Van Eck. Because of its star shape, the fort was named Star-Fort. The construction of a star with 6 pointed sides and a space for 12 large cannons was supposed to ensure that the weapon could cover approaches from all directions. The arms of VOC were used to decorate the gateway of Star Fort. As visitors explore that colonial history by walking the halls of its preserved features, they learn that the fort occupies a central place in Sri Lanka’s colonial past. If you are into historical locales or love to see the ancient structures, then Star Fort is a must-give place on your itinerary.
