Medirigiriya Vatadage is a famous attraction in the beautiful surroundings of Polonnaruwa. The Brahmi characters, which were found on the bricks, and some of the stone carvings reveal that this vatadage belongs to the pre-Christian era. Many kings (Kanittha Tissa) and people helped build and restore it. It is a unique architectural building in Sri Lanka’s history. It was built on a small rock, and it has 3 circles of concentric pillars– the inner circle has 16 pillars, the middle circle 20 pillars, and the outside circle 32 pillars. Other interesting artifacts are the massive stone staircase, the stone wall, 4 carefully carved Buddha’s seated statues on four sides of the stupa house, a hospital with medicine baths, and a dagoba.
