Lumbini Temple is an ancient sacred Buddhist temple. It is believed that it was built during the Anuradhapura Kingdom by King Devanampiya Tissa in the 3rd century BC. There is a small Buddhist shrine under the banyan tree. The temple is the symbol of harmonious coexistence between Hindus and Buddhists. It was abandoned for 30 years because of the terrorism in the north of Sri Lanka. However, with the ceasefire, the temple was renovated as a place of worship for the pilgrims.
