Gadaladeniya Temple

What?
This is a 14th-century Buddhist temple built in South Indian architectural style.

Where?
It is located in Pilimathalawa, Kandy District and approximately 120 km from Colombo.

When?
It can be visited all year long.

Gadaladeniya Temple is located at Pilimathalawa, close to Embekke Devalaya and Lankatilaka Temple. This temple was established by King Wickramabahu, who ruled in 1344. It was built on a rocky outcrop. The temple is reached by a series of steps cut directly into the rock. A moonstone marks the entrance to the main shrine. Gadaladeniya Temple has one main dagoba and another four small ones. In the main shrine room there is a large Buddha’s statue.
