Kanniya is a suburban area of Trincomalee, about 8km from the town. Its specialty is seven hot water wells with different temperatures from cool to hot. The water is supposed to have a healing effect and can cure many minor illnesses. Some records show that these hot water springs go back to the times of King Ravana, who ruled the country over 5000 years ago, and there is archaeological evidence that these wells have been part of a Buddhist monastic complex.
