What? This is a sanctuary for wild elephants and other wildlife, created to protect animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir.
Where? It is located in the Ratnapura district and approximately 165 km from Colombo.
When? It can be visited all year long, though December to April offers the best wildlife sightings.
Udawalawe National Park is widely known for protecting a large number of elephants in Sri Lanka. The Udawalawe Reservoir resulted in the park being formed to care for displaced animals, making it an ideal place for safari tours. In these lush and secure areas, people may see elephants, deer, crocodiles, and a variety of birds.
