Thuparamaya

What?
This is the first documented Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka, in the 3rd century BC.

Where?
It is located in Polonnaruwa District and approximately 205 km from Colombo.

When?
The best time to visit is from December to April, when the weather is dry and pleasant.

Thuparamaya in Polonnaruwa is a well-preserved monument in Sri Lanka, which was built by King Devanampiya Tissa. It is an image house, built for the worship of the Buddha. Today, several ruins of the seated Buddha and other statues of the Buddha along the wall of the shrine can be seen here. Interesting are the eyes of the seated Buddha statue made of a precious stone, which illuminates the image house in the sunlight.
