It is the highest peak in Sri Lanka, called Mount Pedro in English. It is located 7.5 km from Nuwara Eliya. Pidurutalagala is 2,524m high. The nearest explanation of the word Pidurutalagala would be straw- laden rock. In the mountain live many endemic plants and rare animals. Some plants that are supposed to grow only in the Himalayas in India grow here as well. During the ‘80s, there had been a 6-kilometer track to the top, reached on foot or by horse riding, but today, at specific times of the year, travelers are able to reach this summit by vehicles after getting permission. Pidurutalagala is not just a mountain but an important forest reserve. There are various plants, animals, birds, and flowers and a lot of rare species of botanical life. The trees at Pidurutalagala are very interesting because they are twisted and have strangely shaped branches and moss growing on their surface.
