Samudragiri Viharaya is supposed to be lying in the location where Prince Dantha and Princess Hemamala landed in Sri Lanka with the tooth relic of the Buddha. The ancient Buddhist ruins of the Viharaya had been destroyed by the LTTE terrorists in the late 1990s and then re-established by Ven Ellawala Medhananda Thera. It is located at Veheragalla near the Mirissa beach. The significant things to see are a well-maintained library including Ola-leaf books, wall paintings that belong to the Kandyan era, and the stories of the Buddha’s birth and Jataka stories.
