Mannar Fort

This is a square-shaped fort that has four bastions and overlooks the Indian Ocean.

It is located in Mannar District and approximately 220 km from Colombo.

It can be visited all year long.
Mannar Fort is one of the ancient forts in the country. Originally, it was built by the Portuguese in 1560, but the Dutch seized it in 1658 and rebuilt it in 1696. In 1795, the Dutch rulers had to surrender it to the British invaders. It has ramparts and four bastions, which are still in good condition. Currently it is the headquarters of the Sri Lankan Police.
