Brief Garden in Kalutara

What?
This is a beautifully landscaped garden and former residence of Bevis Bawa, the brother of renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa.

Where?
It is located in the Kalutara district and approximately 55 km from Colombo.

When?
It can be visited all year long, though mornings offer a peaceful experience.

The paradise garden of Brief is an ideal place for a daily trip. It used to be the home of Bevis Bawa, a famous artist – painter, sculptor, cartoonist, columnist, and landscape designer. The beautiful estate that covers ten hectares used to be a rubber plantation. Bevis Bawa started clearing and transforming it in 1920 and turned it into a range of lawns with ponds, bamboo hedges, a Japanese garden, and other hidden surprises. The name Brief was given because Bawa’s father, who was a barrister, bought this land with money from a successful legal brief. The highlight of the Bawa’s house is a wonderful mural (wall painting) of Sri Lankan life. It is interesting that having no heir, Bevis Bawa left the estate to his faithful workers, each according to his years of service.
