What? This is home to Sri Lanka’s largest seated Buddha statue, standing 160 feet tall, and vivid murals depicting Buddhist teachings.
Where? It is located in the Hambantota district and approximately 190 km from Colombo.
When? It can be visited all year long, though mornings are ideal for a peaceful visit.
The temple is situated about two kilometers along the road from Dikwella to Beliatte. It is famous for the largest seated Buddha statue in Sri Lanka, 50 meters. It was constructed in the 1960s. To prove the height of the statue, there is an eight-story building behind it. Visitors can climb up inside and look directly at the Buddha’s head. On the way up the staircase, you can admire comic-strip style paintings showing the Buddha’s life. The oldest part of the temple is 250 years old and not particularly interesting. However, the next building is a real hall of horrors with life-size models of sinners and demons and displays of punishments ordered for those who strayed from the path, such as being dunked in a boiling cauldron.
