Pilikiththuwa Temple

What?
This is an ancient cave temple with over 99 drip-ledged rock caves, dating back to the pre-Christian era. It is known for its historical significance and serene surroundings.

Where?
It is located in the Gampaha district and approximately 35 km from Colombo.

When?
It can be visited all year long, with mornings and evenings being the most serene.

Pilikiththuwa Temple is a landmark at Gampaha, and there are 99 caves and various medical herbs within the forest where this temple is situated. According to the historical records, King Walagamba used to stay in this area during the 1st century AD, before he drove away the South Indian invaders. The interesting things to see here are mural paintings, which were done in the 16th century when the Portuguese ruled in some parts of Sri Lanka, and their influence can be seen in these fresco paintings.
