Hikkaduwa is about 100 km south of Colombo and is among the most popular of Sri Lanka’s beach spots. There is something for everyone– coral reefs for divers and snorkelers, waves for surfers, and white sands surrounding numerous cafés and hotels for those who want to rest and relax. The so-called coral sanctuary is a combination of corals and fishes in the tropical surroundings. The coral reef runs straight out from the shore, and you can swim out to the rocks. The water over the reef is only about three or four meters deep. The best time to visit this area is from November to March, when there is a dry season. Between May and October there is monsoon season, and the water can get quite rough.
