Abhayagiri Dagoba is one of eight main places of worship in Anuradhapura. It is the second largest dagoba in the country. It was built during King Valagamba’s reign in the 1st century as the centerpiece of the monastery for 5000 monks. The dagoba is 75 meters high. A distinctive feature is the top portion of the original dagoba, which is known as the hatharas kotuwa (one of the main structures of Sri Lanka’s ancient dagobas). Besides a large slab with Buddha’s footprint, some interesting bas-reliefs and unusual moonstones on steps made from concentric stone slabs can be seen there.
