Thuparama Dagoba in Anuradhapura is the first dagoba, which was constructed after Buddhism had been introduced to Sri Lanka. Its exact location is on the north side of the Ruwanveli Maha Seya Dagoba. It was constructed by King Devanampiya Tissa in the 3rd century BC to contain the right collarbone of the Buddha. At that time, it was a stupa as well as a monastery. Four concentric circles of stone pillars around the dagoba, or vatadage, are undoubtedly unique architectural features; besides, about 41 pillars can be found there. Originally there were 176 pillars. On the northwest side of the dagoba, the ancient Basawakkulama tank can be seen.
