What? The Half Moon Stone, also known as Sandakada Pahana, is a unique architectural feature of ancient Sri Lanka. It is a semi-circular stone slab, intricately carved, and typically placed at the bottom of staircases or entrances of religious sites and royal palaces.

Moonstones are unique sculptures seen at various historically valued and Buddhist places in Sri Lanka. It is a semicircular piece of stone that usually stood at the bottom of a staircase. But the shape and design differ from one period and kingdom to another. The distinctive feature of the Half Moon Stone in Anuradhapura is the outer edge with a carving of flames and a ring below it carved with four animals– the elephant, the horse, the lion, and the bull- chasing each other.
