Thanthirimale is an old village and a Buddhist sacred place located about 40km northwest of Anuradhapura city. It has a historically valued temple because it is believed that during the journey of the Sri Maha Bodhi from India, Sangamiththa and the escort had rested here one night. The sapling of the tree was kept in a pot, and the branch that grew separately from the pot was planted in this village so this event would be remembered. Significant things to see in Thanthirimale are stone statues of the Buddha, ancient inscriptions, ruins of several ancient buildings, natural ponds, a museum, a new shrine, and caves with prehistoric paintings.
