WHAT

Trincomalee is one of the most appealing tourist destinations. Trincomalee is popular for its harbour,r which is known to have a fine economic position and is a major maritime seaport in South Asia. Because the majority of the residents are Tamil, this area is full of Hindu shrines (Kovils). Foreign invaders left behind fortresses and other landmarks. The history of Trincomalee goes back to the 16th century, when there was a turning point. Trincomalee was seized by the Portuguese in 1620 by destructing and robbing of the Koneswaram Temple. The Dutch conquered this area in 1693 and it fell into the hands of the British in 1796. Trincomalee city's architecture displays some signs of interaction between the native and the European styles. There is also the largest Dutch Fort on the island. Trincomalee suffered bomb attacks in the World War II in 1942, and was touched by the civil war between the Sinhalese and the Tamil.
