Kandy, the historical capital of the last Sinhalese Kingdom, is nestled in the hill country and is renowned for its rich heritage and natural beauty. Established as Senkadagalapura by King Wickramabahu III in the 14th century, Kandy resisted foreign invasions due to its rugged terrain until it fell to the British in 1815. The city is home to the sacred Temple of the Tooth, making it a significant pilgrimage site for Buddhists. Kandy is famous for the annual Esala Maha Perahera festival, where the sacred relic is paraded, accompanied by traditional dancers, drummers, and elegantly adorned elephants. Despite its tumultuous history, Kandy remains a vibrant center of culture and spirituality in Sri Lanka.
City of Kandy lies in the centre of Sri Lanka at an altitude of about 500 metres above sea level and about 116km from Colombo.
