WHAT

Galle was ruled by many nations because of its harbour with trade benefits. Many cultural changes happened during colonial ruling, which are still visible in Galle and many landmarks can be seen there to remind us of its history. According to the historians Galle may have been the Tarshish of Biblical times, where King Solomon obtained spices, gems and peacocks. It became prominent with the arrival of the Europeans. In 1505 the Portuguese took shelter on their way to Maldives in the port of Galle. It is believed that they gave the town its name after hearing a cock (galo in Portuguese). Another story says that the name derives from the Sinhala word gala (rock). Nevertheless, the Portuguese built a small fort in 1589, but when the Dutch took over Galle in 1640, they built the current 36-hectare fort in 1663. It is listed as a World Heritage Site today.
